The B3TA Detective Agency
Universalpsykopath tugs our coat and says: Tell us about your feats of deduction and the little mysteries you've solved. Alternatively, tell us about the simple, everyday things that mystified you for far too long.

I can never tell if I'm going to remember something or not.
I've been to some amazing gigs, and can recall seeing the band play that particular song, or when they did it in that particular way or whatever, but my stand-out memory will be the guy in the bugs who was cleaning his glasses on the towel holder or something.
I've been on day-long demos and really only remember how my mate was wearing her purple docs.
Sometimes I'll be doing something - experiencing something amazing, and will tell myself that I really must remember this - to remember what this feels like - to take a moment and allow it all to sink in, and all I'll remember is that I tried to remind myself to remember it.

no examples to share
But I can empathise completely. I too seem to have no control over what I remember or don't. Just with everyday things I can forget what I walked into a room for but somehow remember useless shit like the unusual way my friend used to draw stick-men when I was 5.

This reminds me of a speech in 'Glengarry, Glen Ross'
The bit where Pacino's character says 'The great fucks that you may have had. What do you remember about them? For me it's not the orgasm. Some broad's forearms on your neck, something her eyes did. There was a sound she made...or, me, lying, in the, I'll tell you: me lying in bed; the next day she brought me café au lait. She gives me a cigarette, my balls feel like concrete. Eh? What I'm saying, what is our life?'

Im like this with names
Can never remember peoples names, but I can tell you how they looked, smelt, talked, sounded...felt?
Names though? I usually find myself saying, 'you' and 'mate' until someone drops it into a conversation shortly after, at which point i forget all over again.

A good trick I learned is when introduced to someone, use their name at the first available opportunity.
Even if it's obvious, it tends to ingratiate people to you, unless they're arseholes, in which case it doesn't matter anyway.
