Closeit was to stop Saddam selling it in Euros rather than Dollars. That would have lead to the US economy taking a nose dive because it's only propped up by the fact that all oil is bought and sold in dollars.
As it happened the US economy died anyway in 2008 when a load of bankers got greedy and lent a buch of money that didn't really exist to a bunch of hick billys who could never pay it back to buy up half of detroit which now lies abandoned.
Half of IRAQ is dead, the US economy is dead and the euro's worth buttons. Still the Saudi's are OK selling more oil then every before to the Chinese. Soon they'll have a pipeline running through Afghanistan so they can pump it direct.
It's a pity the Yanks don't understand irony given that all the 9/11 bombers were Saudi and the Chinese now own most of America's Currency.
