I love that book
...but choose a different route. In the USA, everyone seems to start from the NE (New York, Boston) and work their way NW (Seattle, Portland) or head to California. Or they stick to the South (Florida to California). But I've never seen anyone go straight down from (e.g.) Duluth to Corpus Christi 9or the other way)

or, there's plenty of places outside America to motor through. Like the "Africa Smile" (Maputo to Luanda via the South African coast)
