I'm planning a trip to NZ in 2012My girlfriend suggested hiring a camper van and doing the touring thing. I'm a lot less keen. I hate the things in the UK, so it would be hypocritical of me to upset the Kiwis.
Unless of course I hired one with a supercharged V10 in the front, and went haring around at breakneck speed in it. But I'm not sure such things exist, especially in the rental market.
On your BTW point - driving around in an old car is overall more environmentally friendly than buying a new one because of the energy used to make new cars, even though it's more polluting on a daily, local basis.

SeriouslyIt wouldn't be so bad if our roads were better. Our roads are shite. And our drivers are shite. Courtesy on the road is literally a foreign concept. In the summer the conglomeration of campervans, caravans, and heavy trucks turns a slow congested mess into the 9th circle of hell. And sadly, it ain't gonna get better anytime soon.
Do it in the autumn. Traffic is lighter and the trees are prettier. And spend most of your time in the South Island - big place with only 1/4 of the population. :)
