*click*I read a book recently on this matter because I used to wok with the author. He'd dug around in the old magistrate records somewhere covering most of the 1800's and the crimes recorded were pretty horrific by todays standards.
It's all perception really. We just KNOW about more things happening now. The much quoted 'fear of crime' statistics speak volumes.
