I used to wonder why the aliens were theThird Kind. I assumed it was some kind of humanoid/ape ranking system, I suppose. Apes the first, humans the second, and after evolution, the Third Kind. Aliens.
There are, according to Wikipedia, Nine Kinds. Each one getting closer and closer to alien contact, with the Ninth Kind being full on "Hey, Mr. Alien, it's a pleasure to meet y- *ZZAPP*"
