Ask Plod...I'm like you. Haven't a clue how to get it right. Didn't wear ties at our school.
Last time I needed to tie a tie for a job interview, I had no one to do it for me... so stopped at the local Police Station and asked them to do it.

don't they use clip-ons these daysin case they get choked to death by a chav or something?
(Although, that doesn't mean you wouldn't find at least one plod who'd know how to tie one)
