Is it a Sterling, by any chance?
I see that the Subrays are all pretty cheap at the moment. I thought about getting the 4 string version for one of my kids. The Sire Marcus Miller basses are a lot of guitar for the money, too

No, although I did think about getting a Stingray 5 String - the full-fat one
I've already got an '89 4 string but I saw an Ibanez SE505 for £290. The MusicMans are 22 fret though and I really fancied something properly modern. The Ibanez is pretty much exactly what I've fancied. I may hate the thing but only one way to find out...

Edit - if it were me I'd get them a Sterling. Simple, solid, easy to play and robust out of the box but good for upgrades if they want to make it better in the future. The Sire bases are amazing but active so more fiddly and from what I've heard the hardware is not great, though worth upgrading.

I'm pretty much up to date with pressing work + bored as shit = childish silliness on 't3h internet'

Ah, that's worth bearing in mind, cheers
