I think the whole nationalism-through-chance-medical-breakthrough is a bit odd
We have good academic/government/industry partnerships in the UK and a strong, independent uni sector but it was chance that the AstraZenaca worked out well.

Frankly, we've been using overseas student fees to subsidise research in the UK for decades which has been kind-of-great but fuck me it worries me if all those Chinese students stop coming here.
