Norton AV had expired, and I had told it I didn't want to renew, so it was trying absolutely to take my machine down with it.

That's what I'd done.
It was the "complete unstallation" that kicked off all the probs.
He's a wise and experienced guy, and even he was surprised at how far it had got in.
