This is a question Conspicuous Consumption

Have you ever been photographed sat on a balcony eating a croissant; or wallowed in luxury just for the sake of it? What's the most ostentatious thing you ever seen or done?

Expensive pussy
The MD where I used to work was chatting to me one day, and I mentioned that I had cats. He said that his kids - like all kids - had been pestering him to get a pet, so he'd just bought two kittens. But not for him the pet shop, oh no siree. He'd paid about £400 each for a pair pedigree Maine Coon kittens.

Now, Maine Coon cats are great, and make excellent pets. But I can't help thinking that the kids would have been just as happy with any moggie from the local rescue centre.

We've got a Maine Coon as well.....
.... Paid about the same amount for him I think and they really are lovely cats. Grow absolutely huge (in cat terms) and kind of act like a small dog - They follow you around, want to get involved in things, play fetch etc as opposed to the majority of our previous cats which just sit and ignore you until they want feeding.

When you think about how long they last, £400 isn't really a lot in the grand scheme of things. They don't really have any ancillary costs above a normal cat either - the only way he gets treated different from a regular cat is that he needs bathing every couple of weeks due to the long fur.

I really want one now that I've moved out.

No, only coons from Maine.
Coons from the rest of the country are just fine and dandy.

mum brought two...

Paid a fair amount, for Thomas and Jack. Jack was a lazy fucker; didn't do anything. Ever. Thomas on the other hand was, as previously described, just like a small dog. He would chase chocolate wrappers and play fetch, but ONLY with galaxy foil. He could tell the difference, so made us spend more. He also used to follow us to the shops and into town, which was over a mile away. He'd wait outside shops then race you home. Then he became cross eyed. It didn't seem to affect him for some reason. Then there was the incident. Some cruel cunt cut his tail off. Hr came home howling with blood pouring from his arse. We found the tail and froze it. After Thomas left us, we kept the tail. A momento of sorts of our friend. A tail of conspicuous consumption.
