This is a question Hoarding

Willenium says: I had to bring some floppy disks into work which I had been saving for 10 years "in case I might need them". Tell us when your hoarding skills have come in useful (or not, as the case may be)

« Go Back

I live with a hoarder...
..and I finally lost my rag over it, after months of promises from her to do stuff about it. She was told in no uncertain terms, ditch the lot, or I go in and ditch the lot. There were tears, a lot of my saying it was tough shit, and eventually, it got done.

I ended up shredding a whole underbed drawer full of paperwork, as well as boxes of other stuff she'd kept under her bed. Masses of clothes, shoes and trinkets she just didn't wear/use/look at for so long, and the clothes were ones she wouldn't fit into now anyway. She didn't want to part with them on the offchance she might fit into them again. We stopped listening, bagged them up, and told her to get them out of the house. It was fucking amazing how much room we got back from getting rid of all her shite. I have absolutely no time for hoarding, not one little bit. My partner and I prefer to have a very minimalist existence, it's utterly pointless keeping things you're never going to use or not.

Now whenever she leaves rubbish about the place and doesn't put it in the bin, I upload it to Facebook and tag her in it, so all her friends can see what she leaves laying about. It's a shaming tactic, might sound mean, but it works. I love her to bits, but she drives me utterly INSANE with her hoarding/messiness.

Have to ask ..
why do you care what your housemate keeps under her bed? I mean, if it's just boxes of stuff and not, say, rat corpses, why make her get rid of it? Are you her mum? Or just a fucking horrible weirdo?
(, Sat 5 May 2012, 23:24, closed)
^This.
He just sounds like some sort of bullying prick to me.
(, Sun 6 May 2012, 7:24, closed)
It sounds like you have the problem, not her.
I can understand if it is actually 'rubbish', but forcing someone to get rid of actual property like clothes and shoes is ridiculous. I keep clothes that don't fit me- I lost 4st this year and gave a lot of my larger clothes to my mum. Throwing things away because you prefer to live in an empty brick box is your deal. I guess you have the money to buy things for one-off events. Do you chuck your winter coat away every Spring rather than store it?

I'd have told you to fuck off. It's none of your business what someone else decides is important to them.

Haaaaay good lookin', how YOU doin'.

Hungry.

(, Sun 6 May 2012, 16:31, closed)
Jesus, there's a word for you and it isn't a nice one.
She might have been messy but if you did indeed do what you said she should have reported you.
(, Sun 6 May 2012, 1:00, closed)
You're a bit of a cunt aren't you?
And I don't think she's driven you insane. I think that you're nothing more than a bullying prick. I hope that your housemate does go insane and stabs you repeatedly in your smug bullying face.
You prick.
(, Sun 6 May 2012, 7:25, closed)
You're a fucking arsehole. A real fucking arsehole.

(, Mon 7 May 2012, 16:55, closed)
Well, thank you for pointing that out shitcunt.
Maybe you should lurk more and post a bit less, after all you wouldn't want to give the impression that you're a total prick, oh wait, too late.
(, Mon 7 May 2012, 17:10, closed)
You have a problem
Seriously, it's not her who needs to sit back and think about what's going on.
(, Sun 6 May 2012, 8:50, closed)
I think you'll find
her friends on Facebook all have a name they call you and some good advice for her.
(, Sun 6 May 2012, 9:15, closed)
Sadly as you appear to be still alive and/or living with her
it seems she hasn't taken any of their advice.
(, Mon 7 May 2012, 4:10, closed)

You're a big fucking piece of shit aren't you?
(, Sun 6 May 2012, 9:48, closed)

Hell, I'm with you on this one! Filthy housemates suck. I once opened a bag of 'Clothes' at the top of my shared house stairs, as it had been sitting there for 2 weeks. It wasn't clothes. It was rubbish. We got mice in the end in that place, and I had a near nervous breakdown over those filthy hoarding fuckwits. I got sick of tidying up after them and putting their crap in the bin or back in their rooms. It slowly drives you insane. It really is NOT that hard to just put something in the bin. What they keep in their own room is their business, but once it starts to attract rodents or damage the place.. I'm going in there and removing it.
(, Sun 6 May 2012, 11:44, closed)
Wipe the spunk out of your eyes, put the drugs down and read what the prick actually wrote.

(, Sun 6 May 2012, 14:40, closed)
For the record, I've never been bad enough to get mould or vermin.

(, Sun 6 May 2012, 15:23, closed)

Always a bonus. I was living with awful student types who hadn't lived away from home before, it'd seem (Strangely, they had...) and after finally giving in and clearing out their rooms there were pizza boxes with crusts, etc, which had been there for weeks. Can't stand grimey housemates!
(, Mon 7 May 2012, 12:49, closed)
That bowling ball is taking up a lot of valuable space
on the mantelpiece.
(, Mon 7 May 2012, 5:02, closed)

I don't have the bowling ball! He hasn't got rid of the damn thing yet, does that count as hoarding?
(, Mon 7 May 2012, 12:44, closed)
What business is if of yours how messy she is?
So long as her mess is kept to her room and doesn't stink it's nothing to do with you.

Is it your house and she is the lodger? If so then you have something of a say, if not then you can get to Falkirk.

And the uploading pictures to Facebook doesn't sound mean, it sounds like the work of a petty cunt.
(, Sun 6 May 2012, 12:55, closed)
So, your story is 'I am a controlling bully'?

(, Sun 6 May 2012, 13:34, closed)
I think you've confused a human being with a dog, with your 'shaming tactics' and whatnot. Surely what she keeps in her room has got fuck all to do with you.

(, Sun 6 May 2012, 14:14, closed)
I too am joining this sweaty-handed parade of righteous indignation, as soon as I find my pitchfork and flaming torch.

Hey, this is a thread about minimalist existance! Economise!
I mean, a torch AND a pitchfork? He'd be so much happier if you just shoved a flaming pitchfork up his arse. Less clutter.
(, Sun 6 May 2012, 16:35, closed)
Shush it you, I'm trying to make a sale here.
BUY TWO PITCHFORKS AND GET A FLAMING TORCH FREE!

I reckon, as someone who is shit at house cleaning and stuff like that....
... I reckon you're probably being a bit too harsh by forcing it, but my flatmate's guilt-trips when I got a bit lax really did actually help me to become a domesticated person.

I think people here are over-reacting, you know her, you're her mate, you know how far to go. I think I would have rebelled if someone went as far as you did on me, but a guilt trip at the right time (or the thought of getting some mega brownie points doing it _before_ they asked) would get me to proper scrub up. In fact, this thread alone is gonna get me to get the hoover out, as it's been a couple of weeks now.

Although, just so I fit in with trolling, if she was crying over it, you probably went too far, so you're a bitch and all that.
(, Sun 6 May 2012, 15:17, closed)
No, as I understand it,
he tried talking to her- either chuck your stuff or I will, and then in the next paragraph describes how he chucked/shredded/destroyed her stuff for her. So I'm guessing she didn't have much chance to become domesticated. Or even a choice. Fair enough if it was actual garbage but it just sounds like he doesn't like clutter, and decided that her stuff had to go, regardless of how she felt about it.
(, Sun 6 May 2012, 16:34, closed)
I'm so confused with everyone's sex here.
which is greatly effecting my opinion. Are you an ex fat now skinny chick?
(, Sun 6 May 2012, 17:53, closed)
*affecting
And why would my being a transgender 220 st ex 'nam vet alter your opinion of this git's actions?
(, Sun 6 May 2012, 23:22, closed)
if she's eating and spills a bit on the floor, do you rub her nose in it to teach her a lesson?
