This is a question Advice from Old People

Sometimes, just sometimes, old people say something worth listening to. Ok, so it's like picking the needle out of a whole haystack of mis-remembered war stories, but those gems should be celebrated.

Tell us something worthwhile an old-type person has told you.

Note, we're leaving the definition of old up to you, you smooth-skinned youngsters.

My nan
was always fond of saying "make sure you're always wearing matching undies, you never know when you might get hit by a bus".

I guess the fact that it's not uncommon for you to defacate and urinate simultaneously upon impact, thus rendering said matching underwear a bit nasty escaped her.
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 20:02, 205 replies)
I must admit.....
I'm a bit wary of wearing underwear that doesn't match and precisely for that reason.
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 20:05, closed)
I prefer
not to wear them at all, thus negating the issue.
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 20:07, closed)
@ TRL
But then you lose out on a perfectly good pair of trousers. At least this way you only soil underwear. On the whole much cheaper than new trousers.
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 20:11, closed)
Doesn't really make any odds
When they get you to hospital they'll cut all your clothes off anyway. So you're as well to wear old tatty underwear, rather than good stuff you'd be annoyed at losing.
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 20:11, closed)
Everything I wear (other than work stuff) I wear for comfort.
Never wearing matching socks and underwear, just wear what's not got as many holes in it.
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 20:16, closed)
I sometimes
wear clothes with holes in to work.

Mainly because work was responsible for the holes being there in the first place.

Dressing smartly would be fine if it were as comfortable as jeans and a t-shirt.
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 20:30, closed)
I don't mind shirts, they're quite comfy.
And they're much cooler.

But I don't like trousers or jackets and I especially hate ties. Ties are my worst enemy.
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 20:31, closed)
Something I have on my profile right now....

(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 20:35, closed)
Plus
the fact that if yr hit by a bus then you are probably going to be slightly mangled... and there are worse sights than grubby chuddies
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 20:50, closed)
I wear scrubs to work
so often get odd looks on the tube if I've forgotten to get changed into regular clothes. I think I'd rather get hit by a bus while wearing scrubs as you'd probably get better treatment at the hospital. Past history has proved this.

Edit: Evening Mr Z
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 20:50, closed)
Well
presumably you would have to change into clean scrubs just in case there was an accident?
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 20:52, closed)
I'm still getting weirded out. Re-reading people's stories
and putting their image, posture, mannerisms and voice to it...
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 20:53, closed)
But Becky
Surely the chances of being hit by a bus while on the tube are fairly slim?
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 20:55, closed)
True
Last few times I've been to hospital for assorted cat scratches and dog bites I've been wearing scrubs or my nursing uniform and I've been called in almost straight away. I negate to tell them that I'm an animal nurse, not a human one.

Edit: K2k6, I know someone who was hit by a tube train - by accident as she's an idiot - and lived to tell the tail.
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 20:55, closed)
It
might be a minature bus.

Driven by a mind squid.

An illegal immigrant mind squid.

High on crack.

Last time I went to the hospital I was wearing some dungarees
and a hocky mask, I was covered in blood. They must've thought I was a new-age surgeon or something 'cause they got me out of there as quick as they could.
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 20:57, closed)
Thankfully
I've never been to hospital for anything other than very minor outpatient-y things. Touch wood.

*gets wood*

*touches it*

And much as I like nurses' uniforms, I don't think it's quite my style!
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 21:00, closed)
Or one of them buses
erm...yeah...
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 21:01, closed)
*takes the wood off K2k6 and holds it infront of him menacingly*
Grrr. ;)
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 21:01, closed)
Trust me K2k6
This isn't a sexy nurses uniform, it's bloody horrible. So I'm relishing the fact that the company can't agree whether I should wear blue stripes or green stripes or if they should overhaul the trainee vet nurse uniform altogether as I get to wear comfy scrubs instead :)

It's like wearing Pyjamas to work, only without the feeling of "Oh shit I'm wearing my pyjamas to work".
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 21:03, closed)
@Becky
they are dangerous buses.

Our college bar is closing for the summer tonight... its going to be £1 a pint... and then less later on. It could be bad.
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 21:03, closed)
I've worn PJs to work before and not had that feeling...
I just listened to a song called "Air on a G String"... Couldn't help but laugh my arse off at the title with the images of young women in a hip hop music video stylee waving their arses about whilst farting to the tune.
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 21:05, closed)
Zapiola
Oh dear, are you going or just going to listen to the ensuing carnage?
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 21:06, closed)
@Becky
That's an interesting one - wearing your jammies at work. Can't say I've experienced that.

And Gayer, don't grab my wood like that - it bloody hurts!
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 21:08, closed)
So I can't bludgeon you with it?
I guess that would require quite some flexibility...
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 21:09, closed)
As soon as you grabbed it
It ceased to be wood!
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 21:10, closed)
That's not very fair...
It wasn't instantanious. I gave it a squeeze to stop the blood escaping too fast.

Things are gradually beginning to take shape with my journey. I've spoken to my friend and I can stay on the Friday night, but even so, things are still pretty much up in the air.

I do indeed look forward to annoying everyone with tales of the July bash.

@clendrix
One of my other friend who I wanted to come along can't make it that weekend so it looks like I could be making my journey back with the b3tans. Not yet sure what I'll be doing on the Friday so the journey there is a bit up in the air.

So far, only four of us have signed up, and I'm not sure if ancrenne is taking the train, bus or some non-existant surreal form of transport. Once we know who's doing what, things can start to take shape.
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 21:53, closed)
OK
here's what I plan to do - be in Exeter by early afternoon on the Saturday, check in to central hotel somewhere and arse around in shops/cathedral until designated meeting time. On Sunday, eat breakfast with whomever's around and then catch a train back early afternoon.

Still flexible at this point through!

@Becky - Russell! *swoons*

@becky
Are you coming to the July bash?

Have read your report in the other thread, and like with everyone else's accounts, it sounds like I would have fitted in seemlessly, and made me wish I had been part of it.

* sobs but feels happy for those who went *

Sorry to hear about your date with the Italian dude. If you want, I can teach you some Italian swear-words if he starts pestering you. Does your swearing off Internet dating also include b3ta dating?
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 22:00, closed)
'Allo!
I am bad. Drunk two days in a row!

I hope my typing skills hold up!

Happy Friday, everybody!
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 22:01, closed)
I doubt I'll be at the exeter bash
as it's a few days before payday and I have a lot of catch up bills to pay then. How much are train tickets?

Internet dating isn't like b3ta dating. Well in my mind anyway, so not swearing off that. I did Italian GCSE, so know some choice words if he decides to be a prick. But thanks :)

Clendrix, he's really not that hot and I already know 5 girls who have slept with him on four different occasions.

Evening DIT *hugs* Was lovely meeting you yesterday. I think suspenders and fishnets FTW

Am sober tonight but may come on drunk tomorrow night.

@clendrix
On Saturday, I'll come from my Friend's place (either I'll come by public transport or he'll give me a lift) which is on the other side of Devon. I'll probably arrive earlier than you, and will try and meet up with other early-comers. My plans for Sunday are more or less the same as yours.

EDIT:
@becky
Singles from Waterloo were as cheap as £22.00 last time I checked. From Padington, it's £25.00.

I move back to the UK on the 1st of August, so sadly not. booo. Maybe me, Loon, Citadel, workboresme etc should do a stateside bash...

EDIT: @ancrenne. Fair do;s, I will bow to the b3ta bash knowledge of venues! :) it's generally better if I'm just told what to do... I know you were talking about a couple in islington, like the Angelic, etc... There's a nice pub on just off Upper St whose name escapes me. Mind you, I would say Islington is a good plan as it's where my flat is in that London.

Re being lovely loving everyone: I hope I'm not going to seem less real to you for the time being.

Ancrenne: Feels most honoured

Oi, stoppit, you're making me yawn too
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:32, closed)
Am I the only one that feels awake properly?
I had a slow start this morning...

Gayer, I'm about to send you a message, so hang about for a couple of minutes if you like?
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:33, closed)
Okay, you've got 5-10 mins.
:)
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:34, closed)
G'night Gayer
* yawns also *

EDIT: @Kaol: Of course you are - you're Kaol.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:35, closed)
I know that...
But all things considered, I should be tired too.
I've had a busy day.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:36, closed)
In bed
So who here is reading b3ta snuggled up in the comfort of their cozy bed?

I'm not.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:38, closed)
I am
:)

But I'm heading to switch off land now as I'm knackered. Night all
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:39, closed)
I'm not either.
I'm sitting at the desk, drinking cherry coke.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:39, closed)
@Kaol
I think I may be catching your insomnia through teh intertubes. I stay up late and despite being unemployed still get up at 8.

Edit: Night Becky
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:40, closed)
An idea I had
Perhaps we should have a virtual pyjama party. We take a laptop to bed and post to b3ta. It will feel cozy to all know we're in bed with eachother this way. It will be called "In bed with b3ta".
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:42, closed)
I was in bed
With ancrenne this morning.
Does that count?
*grins*
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:43, closed)
Er...
I can edit that if you wish...
:p
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:47, closed)
Kaol & ancrenne
Is there something I should know about?

@ancrenne
Wearing pyjamas is optional. You just need to feel comfy.

@Kaol
It only counts if you had a laptop.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:49, closed)
No laptop...
So I guess it doesn't count...
I had an epic hangover though.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:52, closed)
That's not a baloon...
Ewww... you haven't!
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:53, closed)
It's a space station!
Haven't what?
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:54, closed)
Haven't
had sex with ancrenne and tried to pass off the used condom as a baloon.

And I thought you were such a nice boy.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 0:59, closed)
I'm not that sort of man!
Honestly...
*frowns*
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:00, closed)
And that's supposed to cheer me up after missing the bash?

(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:02, closed)
It's ok...
The Scotland one will be a lot of fun!
Just need to sort out it all nearer the time.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:03, closed)
Yep
We are the late night crew.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:03, closed)
Yes indeed
In other news, I managed to slice my finger awkwardly last night, and I keep catching the scab.
*frowns*
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:06, closed)
@Kaol
Is this also something I should know about?
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:09, closed)
I don't remember how it happened
I think Al might though.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:11, closed)
Perhaps we should have another bash
just to piece together what went on at this one. But then we'll get drunk and forget it all over again.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:13, closed)
'Night ancrenne
Hope you don't have to wash any clothes in the sink again...

*ahem*
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:16, closed)
I'll be on at night tomorrow
drunk.

Good night ancrenne
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:17, closed)
It's all beginning to be pieced together now...

(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:20, closed)
Yes...
I'm writing it all into a long story, but I can gaz you the short version if you like?
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:21, closed)
Hallo

(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:22, closed)

(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:24, closed)
Gents

Bad bad bad idea

Now i want fish and chips
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:26, closed)
Ouch...
I mean, that's good value.
But I tend to find that when alcohol is cheap I'll still spend the same amount over all, and get far too drunk.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:28, closed)
Yeah
I haven't drunk uiness for a while and toniht I spent £5 on guiness.

I really really really want fish and schips
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:31, closed)
Getting drunk
I find that being in my mid 30s, my alcohol tolerance is going down. On the plus side, it means I can get drunk cheaper.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:32, closed)
Yeah
I've noticed that too. Whe n I was 20 I got wreckd and felt fine.

Now I'm 26 and 5 punnts down and tomororow I'm going to be in so mcuh pain
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:33, closed)
hello, evenin'
I'm going to try and sleep now but thought I'd say hello, you're a lovely lot, first. I've been awake since 4.30am so I really could use the rest. But hi, night shift people.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:33, closed)
Hi CHCB

(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:36, closed)
Bugger

Although Im tempted to sart drinkign rum now.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:40, closed)
I need to slow down the drinking
Or I won't make it to 30 to find out.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:41, closed)
From what I heard about last night
it sounds like you're lucky to have made it to today.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:43, closed)
Yeah...
I did have a can of cider on the train on the way back tonight though.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:45, closed)

Mr. Z, I'm impressed, you've gone for the good stuff!
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 1:57, closed)

(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 2:02, closed)
A man of fine tastes...
*swirls glass*
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 2:03, closed)
Yeah
I drink rum like some people drink whiskey.

Theres no point in spending money on bad rum.

Vodka on the other hand.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 2:05, closed)
Cheap vodka
Is worth it.
Just don't buy Smirnoff, it's horrible.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 2:05, closed)
Yeah
but Konstantinov is even worse.

Ah rum... its great
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 2:07, closed)
Never had that...
The worst was Pavlov Vodka.
Had an aftertaste that made me think of petrol...
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 2:08, closed)
Yeah
like three anchors cider... that stuff is atrocious.

So its scotsmac... thats horrible stuff.
(, Sat 21 Jun 2008, 2:12, closed)
*shudders*
That's quite enough of that, considering I managed to puke all over myself last night...

Anyway, I've gotta work tomorrow, so I'm going to bed.
Night!
