I love the Silmarillionbut then I've also been known to read the Prose Edda and Mabinogion for fun, so my recommendation may not be the most reliable.
(I've also been known to read both Unfinished Tales and also quite a few of the History of Middle Earth books. Morgoth's Ring and War of the Jewels are the best of them, that's the stuff he culled the Silmarillion out of.)
