I thought that was how it was pronounced for many yearsas I'd only read it and never heard it spoken.

if we are doing "never heard it pronounced before"As I was a precocious* little Chutney who had read a LOT of books by the time I was about 11. I was quite relived the first time I actually heard someone say "Debacle" It had bugged me for years!
