It's a bit hard to explain what's going on, I sort of understand it.
Here's a low-cylindery version from the other side, I think it's the same but half out of phase.

If you look at it perfectly side on, it barely moves.

It's a toroidal spiral
the wobbly bit is the x coordinate of each point being shifted around a sine wave.

I guess you're looking down the X-axis in the version that stays mostly still, then.
