Many years ago I had this Russ Abbott fun book (comic annual). One of the best bits in it was a character called Boggles:Boggles' biplane has just been shot down over Germany, and is going down in flames in the background.
The pilot is in the foreground, drifting down on a parachute, reading through a phrasebook.
Boggles: 'Never mind 'I wish to buy a glockenspiel', what's the jerry for 'I am an ignorant shepherd'?
Next frame: Boggles tied to chair in a cellar, Nazi interrogator holding a red-hot iron next to his face.
Nazi: 'You are a spy!'
Boggles: 'I am an ignorant shepherd!'
Nazi: 'A shepherd spy! That's even worse!'
