especially as we are usually in the family bus which weighs about 2 tons fully laden, and by that point in the journey, the turbo has usually overheated and switched off, so it means accelerating like a cow into fast moving traffic.

Just down the road from here is the New Jersey Turnpike. There are generally 3-4 times more toll booths than lanes, and about 1/4 of those are electronic pre-paid (EZ Pass), so you can just drive right through.
