i saw your artrage thing
and whilst it is very lovely, i don't think that tumblr image is done in the same way.
i don't reckon it's a 'trace'

Hmmm
I'm not convinced either, but I'm still leaning towards thinking it's a colour pickup of some kind.
The whole palette, and the highlight colours particularly, look to me as if they've been sampled straight from an image.
Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'm personally intrigued to know how it was done, and like I said, I do suspect it's something other than just a straight-up painting from scratch.

Ok, look at the belt
Was someone painting that and thought, I need a random splash of bright yellow at the back there. Or was just a highlight colour they picked up from a source pic then thought, that looks good.
I'm not actually convinced that I'm right, but it's like a nagging suspicion every time I look at the pic.

oh, i think it's a trace, but not an 'automated' one like i was trying in artrage
i think that block of yellow, and the detail in the nose give away that it's been done directly over a photo layer, but i don't know how 'automated' the colour selection or brush strokes are.
i've just downloaded a painter free trial, and i'm gonig to have a play

Ok
we're on the same page then.
What I've been trying in Painter is setting brushes to pick up colour from the source pic instead of the colour palette. (Edit: That's how I made the pic you're talking about).
If you use the oil brushes, you'll see how quickly you can replicate some of the strokes and effects.
On the other hand, I've also been struck by how clever the tumblr pic is. There's more than one technique in use there, unless there's a whole other way of going about this that I'm missing so far.
Regardless, Painter is loads of fun and I'm really enjoying exploring it.
