It (the film) actually has an alternate ending, its better than the theatrical one.
However (like lots of his films) it drags on for about 14 and a half weeks when you watch the directors cut.
The endings better though if you have a spare 3 and a half months, I couldn't find it with a quick Youtube search (possibly too long for Youtube) but I am sure its out there.

I think that's why I've not seen the film"oh, yet another Cameron film which will end three or four times before it gets to the credits"
