A 'Wednesday Night Special', in one of his books (1990s, but not sure exactly when), is a disposable device imported from Poland.
It's a single shotgun cartridge fitted with a cheap trigger mechanism. It only needs to be used once.

cos if it's used unsuccessfully, you'd end up with half your face blown off and your hands destroyed, but still alive. And, with the book being set in the US, an extremely large medical bill.
So the user would have to be pretty fucking sure.
