I haven't used gradients much for that, so I can't judge what is best
but there are usually a number of ways to accomplish something
almost nothing works globally because if you get one part of the face looking right, then something else gets whacked. I usually make layers of different parts of the face and work with them independently. but that's just me

i use Paint Shop Pro, and sliding the R, G, & B up and down seem to work more easily for me
