I was 12 or 13 and had gone round my pal's house one Thursday after school.
We were sat watching Top Of Them Pops and The Proclaimers - entirely new to us, I think it was their first hit - came on, doing "Letter From America".
Within seconds, both of us were practically ROFLing, pointing at the screen, laughing too much to speak, cos we thought they were uncool and shit.
His mum, a social worker, had walked in behind us and was looking on.
Eventually, she snapped: "What are you pair laughing at? At least they're trying their best, and they've had to struggle a lot more than you have."
We were mystified.
Then we realised. She'd taken a quick look and assumed they were disabled.
I intend to tell them this story one day.

So nobody'll ever hear the tale again, ye privileged few!
