We once had a happy clappy Christian temping for us, who was incredibly upbeat and chirpy. One morning she came in and trilled 'Good morning, Mr Vagabond - what a lovely day the Lord has blessed us with!', to which I replied, 'Yes, well, Sarah - every day is but another step on our unstoppable march towards death.'

I felt terrible because her face completely changed - not in a patronising way, but of realisation.
