I think the original is one of those films that probably works brilliantly
in the cinema, as it allows you to sit and think about what you are watching.
On DVD, there is always too much distraction to truly get absorbed in something that slow.

That could well be it.
I do try to make time to watch a film from start to end without interruption - Solaris wasn't too hard, but Once Upon a Time in America has certainly proved a challenge.
