clunky how? not the fine tuning for optimisation that you get in imageready, but otherwise it seems serviceable(bear in mind I have been using MS Gif Animator, which is more like banging two rocks together)

Rocks are good!I sometimes use the ImageMagick commandline tools to make gifs. Which, to follow your analogy, is like banging sand together.
