I think it might be a member of the sausage family, but a kind of embarrassing in-law that the others try and avoid.

The sausage depicted is clearly a Cumberland.
You can tell by the curvature of the spine.

Oh, absolutely.
I believe that the "pricking" of sausages began after the awarding of the Culloden Medal to the original Cumberland Sausage.
