Their capitulation to the Nazis was because it was too rude even for the French to militarise their border with their Belgian allies, so they got hit in an unprotected flank by an unexpected attack moving at a completely unprecedented pace.
If the French were so cowardly, how come they spent roughly a millennia being the bane of the English? Either they're proper trouble, and the English did well for beating them, or the English who conquered the British isles then a good chunk of the world took nearly 1000 years to come to a peace with a surrender prone foe.
The long and short of it is only Americans, who aren't expected to understand history, not being born with any, have any excuse to erroneously denigrate the French military
