I'd be surprised if the police actually advise
parents to go down the media route.
The McCanns willingness to be so open with the papers probably helped make it a bigger story, but they get some awful shit in return.
Missing child stories that make the TV news usually feature the parent being interviewed, presumably because that's more gawp-fodder for the viewers than talking to a policeman.
