No, gif is the right choice to preserve fine detail.The reason it's massive is because it's actually 1000 pixels wide and has only been scaled down in HTML.

if you want fine detail then png is your friendgif fucks the colours down to 255 and has a compression algorithm that hasn't changed since 1995
