because I have simply heard of it, not tried it. Yacht or boat varnish, I am told, although it will bring out different colours in your painting. People who claim to use it allow for that in the colours they use, so yes trial and error I'm afraid.

Yes, any varnish will change the colour and contrast.
On the plus side, if you're using good acrylics, there's no real need to varnish it.
