My attempt at a de-scotted flag:
- the 'Green Field' from the Welsh flag (let them keep the dragon, don't want to rob their flag of it's awesomeness)
- the yellow/gold from the Ulster flag
- the red cross from the England flag
- traditional white seperator between the lot
no LOLs here I'm afraid

And that's the most perfect tribute to the lost brethren.

I mean, there were plenty of people lost under the German Imperial Eagle, but I don't see that used as an objection to the current tricolour.

But in more seriousness, if they leave I highly doubt anyone would be either arsed or motivated to remove a fairly popular feature of the UK (and a traditional one at that) for the sake of making an flag organised by the OCD and Pedants Alliance. Questions will be raised, certainly, but a really big push to remove it? I'd say doubtful unless everyone else in Britain turns out to be a group of angry broken hearted people.

We kept the Saint Patrick's Saltire in the flag after the partition of Ireland. Plenty of independent states still use the Union Jack in their flags to indicate their origins as British colonies. There is no reason why shouldn't we keep the St Andrew's Saltire. Also, the Queen will remain head of state in an independent Scotland.

as for the lack of Saltire, just trying a different direction.
Seeing as you seem to know a bit: I've always wondered why the light blue from the St Andrew's Saltire isn't carried across to the Union Jack, which is notably darker, any idea why that is?
