The Commodore Amiga in particular had some of the most brutally difficult games ever. Another World, Flashback, Shadow of the Beast, Gods, Runestone, the list goes on and on.
Not only were they particularly challenging, but the internet wasn't exactly prevalent in those days - never mind trying to find a walkthrough for said game. Your best bet was keeping your fingers crossed that the next issue of Amiga Format might throw a few merciful clues your way. Either that, or find somebody who's big brother was an absolute guru at that kind of stuff and watch how he did it.
Without a doubt there are still games in the current generation that pose a challenge, but it's nothing like how it was in the 90's.

Walkthroughs wouldn't be useful for a lot of games as the difficulty was dexterity based. But I agree that games were way harder back in the day.

Rick Dangerous too. I must have only been about 11 or 12 at the time, but I'm pretty sure I cried with frustration at one point playing that fucking game.

Shadow of the Beast, although brilliant, is fucking impossible.

And utterly gorgeous to look at, as long as you don't try and make the mistake of getting anywhere with it.
