I have a Ukranian Facebook friend, a lovely young woman I met in a Bulgarian ski resort five years ago and haven't met up with since. She has of course been making lots of posts about the war, and I have been sending her messages of solidarity. It's worth pointing out that in every single one of her English posts she uses the spelling 'Kiev' for her home city.

Ukrainian. I am aware from a scientific point of view that she constitutes one data point and doesn't prove anything, it may be true that most Ukrainians spell it Kyiv, I wouldn't know. But for now I am happy that the traditional English spelling Kiev is not morally wrong. (And after all, the fact that Putin is a depraved murderer does NOT mean that all Russians are depraved murderers. I lived in a Bulgarian ski resort for seven years and met lots of Eastern Europeans, Russians, Romanians, Moldovans, Ukrainians, Serbians and Macedonians as well as Bulgars, and I can assure you that very few of them were depraved murderers.)
