# Heath Robinson ....
... was a British artist most famous for his fantastically complicated machines ... imagine Escher meets Da Vinci, with the humour of Gerard Hoffnung.

The phrase Heath Robinson entered the English language to describe any insanely convoluted machine, particularly one involving pulleys, levers etc.

/edit - added a link to Encarta.

Meanwhile, just found this. One of the WWII electronic cipher-breakering machines (forerunners to modern computers) was named Heath Robinson.
