I think you're confusing two different stories.The explosion at the end of Eartshock wipes out the dinosaurs, I think. Could be wrong.

Probably, but then..I was too young to remember it clearly, the only thing I was sure about was that he died and DrWho gave a lame excuse for not being able to go back in time and save him.
