trolls realize that they're upsetting people
trolls think it's fun or amusing
trolls stay around until they get bored

if we'd all just ignore them completely it wouldn't be any fun for them, and they'd leave faster

This person isn't so much a troll, as just very very slow. He needs help

but it would appear that 99% percent of people on here can't grasp that concept at all and feel the need to post a stream of messages making the troll threads some of the biggest on the board :\
