There's a million monuments to this and that in Washington DC. It's only ten square miles, and added to the law that buildings may not be over thirteen stories high, they're running out of room there. So, in order to save space, the city decided to combine a few of the monuments, with mixed results:

(it could be worse. The original idea was the lincoln monument + the washington monument.)

you're right. I should *know* that too, I've been to DC.
I suppose that DC simply moved the washington monument to New York...yeah, that's what happened.
