like if you look
really closely at most prints it's made up of lots of little dots (magenta, cyan, yellow). i think the name for that is pantone. but that could be the name of the standard colour chart, is a long time since i did colour analysis.

You're referring to CMYK color seperation, I think.
Similar to RGB, but with different colors.
Pantone is a tint/hue chart
/edit: if you look real closely at your monitor, you'll find it's made of red green and blue dots...
