'bling bling' is a term of ebonic etymology-- a homophone verbally depicting the manner in which jewels sparkle. used as a noun, 'bling' or 'bling bling' generally denotes excessively gaudy jewelry (usually diamond-encrusted platinum) and other lavish swag, oft perceived as a status symbol by inner-city african-americans, and preferred by rap musicians who desire to flaunt their success. the term was purportedly popularized by cash money recording artist baby gangsta, whose song "bling bling" captures the essence of the phenomenon:
