It's the Minors Strike.
**Edit** My 100th posting! Took me long enough...
When you get your phone service on, go with AT&T for your international long distance. Do NOT use the 10 10 dialling option (you'll know what I mean when you get there). AT&T are the best - I know this through experience.
Do the tourist stuff as well ;)
Are you coming out on your own? If so, do what you can to build up a circle of friends outside work - you'll need them from time to time.
And just watch out for breaking any laws, cops in the USA are ANAL!

long distance calls :'( I used to think calling home from Leicester was far enough.
More importantly, any hints re. getting on the interwebby? And what laws have you broken?

I can set you up with a really great ISP, $10 per month. They'll also do you a 'puter for $40 a month including internet access. It's only 56K though.
You'll need to get cable TV - regular telly is shite, and for around $35 a month extra you can get broadband (again, AT&T is one to go with).
Make sure your car is always insured - you'll go to jail if it's not, also you will ALWAYS need to carry ID aruond with you. And your driving license.
PS. AT&T costs around 10c per minute to call home ;)
