Maybe they just used the
"Gif to ASCII" program on each frame of the animation...

I've got a proggy that turns images into ASCII... all you'd have to do would be ASCIIfy a few frames of a walking bloke and feed 'em into a GIF editor. If you want, I'll try and find the URL for the proggy...
