# I don't really see the problem.
The Golliwogs (sic) were just dolls which happened to be based on Black People. They lived in toytown and were equals.

The original Golliwogg was a baddy, but the implication that he was a baddy just because he was black is nonsense. Most stories have a baddy, to have some black and some white and some brown and some red and some yellow and some green bad characters shows diversity, not prejudice, surely?

The ragdolls were equals too.

I don't understand what is percieved to be racist about portraying blacks. Black people exist. Surely not portraying them is the racist option?

Obviously the name 'Golliwogg' contains the term 'Wog' which has developed racist connotations, but the dolls are just dolls. Rebrand them mabe?

# i agree with you on this one
it doesn't make much sense to me

# Nor to me,
but by far the best (most ridiculous) suggestion I've come across was in the Telegraph...

"Surely the easiest solution is to make white ones"

EDIT: aren't they also a cuddly protrayal of the B&W Minstrels or did the Golli come first

# They already exist.
Cabbage patch kids are racial stereotypes too, with ginger hair and freckles!

# BUT . . .
The original Golliwogg was called that.

Golliwog was adapted by others later to be in line with the fact that, as opposed to the initial character (a kind of gnome) they were 'Western Origin Gentlemen'.

I'm not saying that Blyton was not racist, just that it doesn't matter what she thought, a black doll is just as good as a white doll and I, for one, happen to be rather fond of Robinson's Gollys.
