sure, you can (for example)have frame 1 of a fruitbowl and the last frame of a kettle and you can go cut from the fruitbowl and show a hot air balloon for a while, then cut to the kettle at the end.
You have total artistic freedom. It might be nice to have some kind of continuity or some reference at some point that can be used by the brain of the viewer to connect or in some way combine the 2 frames.
But it's not absolutely essential.
