On the 'save for web/optimised' tab
Try setting the matte to c5c5c5 (close to board colour)?

that's my other option (than png)
but it'll fuck up if the background colour is changed in the style sheet.

other than turning off anti-aliasing and making it all of the chunky around the edges.

Gifs only do On or Off transparency- no levels in between.
Try changing "Matte" to none.
Or you could try a 24-bit PNG if the file-size isn't too big, but IE6 users won't see it properly.
