may i thank all you loverly people for helping me to cure my virus problem. stuffing my machine with oily rags and setting fire to them seems to have done the trick.
anyone know of a nice hostel as i've just burnt the house down.

sorry i didn't answer you earlier.it got to exactly where you said at boot up but but went no further.
i buggered off to poke it with with a pointed stick at that stage.
i ran a couple of virus scans and rather than trying to boot in safe mode it booted up fine in normal mode.
