TJ: Anyone know any ways to make closed 3D curves (not surfaces, continuous loops) using a package, software library, anything?

You could try 3DS or Maya

I guess that might work.

It's just that it's a very symmetric curve I have in mind, that might just be some cos/sin wave.

Basically, take 4 U shapes, invert 2 of them and stick them together..

but as puro says above for 3D work I would suggest you use a 3D package. As well as the above I use Daz Bryce 6.1 and Daz Studio plus ZBrush.
