
you see buying cars is something i avoid. i wait until other people are so sick of them that they are willing to give them away.
the other option i go for is 'short term ownership':
pay 50 quid for an imminent MOT failure wreck, run for six to 9 months, weigh it in for 30 quid scrap. bargain!

i take the wreck to the scrappy.
he gives me 30 quid.
the car gets crushed*
profit**!
*neatly disposing of the body in the boot too!

Living in London, my car was just for heavy shopping and local trips.
My best was a clapped out Rover 213. I bought it for 250 pounds and kept it for almost 4 years. Only replaced the brake pads and chucked in a bit of oil on the odd occassion.
The only reason it failed its MOT was because of rust.
