lower the colours until you can bear it no longer, and maybe make it a bit 'lossy'
don't have dither selected unless absolutely necessary
if it's still huge, add scanlines on every other row

and how exactly do I go about lowering the colours?
I'm using Imageready and I'm a complete novice in case you haven't noticed.

and play about in there.

You could add scanlines,
or half the image size then double it up with uplaod codes (<img src="blah.jpg" width="280" height="280" />)
