I'm USELESS in Illustrator I'm afraid.Having said that, it is possible to change the units used for measurement. Would that help?
If so try Edit -> Preferences -> Units and Measurements

Haha pure fluke.I'm hopeless in Illustrator. My usual routine is: I open it, struggle to get something started for about 20 minutes, then think, "I could have finished this by now if I'd used Photoshop"... and then I open Photoshop :)
